The DoI will conduct an updated review of pedestrian routes to schools as part of its Transport Strategy, due this autumn.
The move comes after Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas asked how the department rates school access compared to a 2018 audit.
Minister Dr Michelle Haywood confirmed the department currently uses the 2018 Pedestrian Environment Review System (PERS) by SYSTRA, which scored routes within 400m of each school.
Road safety improvements, including 20mph speed limits in residential areas, were highlighted as key to safer school zones.
“This will significantly contribute to safer pedestrian environments around schools,”Dr Haywood said.
The minister also pledged collaboration with local authorities and schools, stating: “The Department looks forward to working collaboratively with local authorities, schools, and communities when developing the new active travel strategy.”
The review aligns with broader efforts to promote walking and cycling. Full details will be published in the Transport Strategy later this year.
