A UK-based specialist contractor will carry out precautionary safety checks before drainage works resume at the airport.
On June 20, devices containing phosphorous—believed to date back to the 1940s—were discovered on site by the principal contractor.
These were safely disposed of the following day by the UK Military UXO disposal team.

Next week, personnel from the specialist contractor will arrive on the island to conduct a thorough site examination.
Should any additional devices be found, they will also be safely disposed of.
“Before we can proceed with the drainage project, it’s essential we ensure the site is safe,” said Matt Shaw, Operations Director at the airport.
“We’re keeping local residents informed throughout the process to provide reassurance and updates on progress.”

There was no disruption to flights when the devices were initially discovered, and no disruption is anticipated during the upcoming site inspections.
The airport and contractors are maintaining close communication with relevant authorities throughout the operation.
The safety assessment and clearance work is expected to take between two and four weeks to complete.
