What’s on This Tynwald Weekend

Tynwald Hill on Tynwald Day with the Island’s Legislature assembled

The Isle of Man will mark its National Day on Monday, with the traditional Tynwald Ceremony and a wide range of community events across the weekend.

As July 5 falls on a Saturday, this year’s ceremony will instead take place on the Monday, making July 7 a public holiday.

The extended Manx National Weekend will feature events including the SPARK family festival at the Villa Marina in Douglas on July 5, live music at Glyn Wyllin campsite the same day, the Round the Island Yacht Race starting on the July 6, Port St Mary National Day on July 7, and the ever-popular Cronk y Voddy sports day also on Tynwald Day.

Tynwald Day

The formal Tynwald ceremony will be accompanied by a full day of activities in St John’s, beginning at 9am.

Highlights include the Tynwald Fayre on the back Fairfield, the Viking Village in Cooil-y-Ree showcasing the island’s Norse heritage, and the Global Village in the Arboretum with international food, music and dance.

The Bunscoill Ghaelgagh will host Manx language events, while the Royal Chapel will feature performances by local choirs and musicians in the afternoon.

Music

Music will play a central role throughout the day, with the Onchan Silver Band opening proceedings at 9:10am, followed by the Isle of Man Wind Orchestra and Castletown Metropolitan Silver Band after the ceremony.

The TynwaldFest tent will offer shanty singing, Manx music sessions and evening performances from acts including The Enthusiasts and Blue Train Big Band.

For the first time this year, Birdie’s Crazy Golf will set up a Manx-themed course on the Front Green from 4pm to 8pm.

The celebrations will conclude at 10pm with a performance by Ellan Vannin Pipes and Drums on Tynwald Hill, accompanied by fire performers Skimmee Aile.

Additional attractions include willow weaving demonstrations, family nature trails at Garey yn Ellan Ain Gardens, and homemade refreshments at the Methodist Hall.
