The 1st Douglas Scout Group have put their skills to the test during an action-packed day trip to Chester Zoo.
Setting off on a morning boat, the group of 35 young people, along with volunteers and parents, sailed from the Isle of Man to Liverpool before heading to the zoo.
The group said: “After the smooth and sunny crossing to Liverpool, which included breakfast on the boat, and one or two coffees for the volunteers, we safely arrived in Liverpool.”
Once at the zoo, each age group had a different challenge. The Beavers (aged 6-8) searched for specific animals, while the Cubs (aged 8-11) navigated using paper maps. The Scouts (aged 11-14) explored independently, checking in with leaders at set times.
Despite the heatwave, the group observed a wide variety of animals and learned about wildlife conservation. The trip also helped them progress toward badges such as animal friend, navigator, and team work.
Lead Volunteer Martin Hazell said: “I feel so proud that Scouting gives the opportunity for people to do things they may not normally have a chance to do, learning from one another and developing friendships that will last.”
