A woman who fraudulently bought tobacco with a credit card found in the shop she works in has been fined.
Louise Corkill, 51, of Douglas, admitted one charge of fraud by false representation.
Prosecutor Barry Swain said that on July 27, when Corkill was working at the Spar store at Port Jack, she picked up a credit card that had been found and used it to buy 30g of Amber Leaf.
She then put the tobacco back on the shelf, but confirmed she planned to take it later.
The card belonged to a man who didn’t know when he had lost it, but discovered the fraud quickly when he saw the card had been used.
Defence advocate Ian Kermode said his client had acted in a “moment of madness” when she used the card’s contactless function to pay for the tobacco, which was valued at £25.15.
In an apology letter read to the court, Corkill said she was “deeply ashamed by what I’ve done”.
Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood ordered Corkill to pay £400 fine plus £25.15 compensation to the man, as well as court costs totalling £125.
