Significant Reduction in Mine Contamination

Work undertaken at Snuff the Wind resulted in a 64% reduction in lead and zinc entering Peel Marina, according to figures released under FoI.

The measures, including closing the Cross Vein Mine site to off-road vehicles and installing leaky dams, saw lead levels at Kerrowdhoo Farm Ford drop by 69.4% (from 372 kg/year to 114 kg/year) and zinc by 63.8% (from 160 kg/year to 58 kg/year).

The government said: “The significant reduction in lead and zinc total load indicates the effectiveness of the three stages of the Cross Vein Mine works already undertaken.”

However, it noted further action is needed, adding: “Installation of the capping layer and works to stabilise Dixon’s Mine washfloor are still required.”

Monthly water sampling will continue ahead of planned capping works at Cross Vein Mine in late 2026.

The data identified key pollution sources, including Foxdale Mine Adit, where zinc levels reached 2,914 kg/year.
