The Steam Packet Company has opened applications for two local Deck Rating Apprentices.
This is the first time the company has offered this apprenticeship scheme, which is only open to Isle of Man residents.
The new IOMSPC apprenticeships provide comprehensive training leading to professional certifications, and practical experience, giving budding seafarers the opportunity to play a vital role in the running of the island’s lifeline ferry service.
Deck Rating Apprentice
A Deck Rating Apprentice is a trainee position, where individuals learn the fundamental duties necessary for the safe and efficient operation of a vessel.
The role is a vital part of the navigation department, assisting in a variety of tasks including watch-keeping, maintaining safety and security, and performing practical seafaring duties such as mooring operations and vehicle deck operations.
“We are excited to open these positions and support local talent interested in embarking in a successful career at sea,” said Ethel Docherty, Human Resources Manager at IOMSPC.
“The course equips apprentices with all the necessary skills and certifications, and we are proud to foster the next generation of maritime professionals and ensure they have the support and resources needed to thrive in this dynamic industry.”
Apprenticeships
The Deck Rating Apprenticeships can begin in September and take around two- to two-and-a-half years to complete.
If positions are not filled immediately there are later intakes available throughout the year for applicants not able to start in September.
If successful it is hoped to extend the apprenticeship scheme to Engine Ratings and Customer Services positions in the future.
