Three local students have competed at the International Linguistics Olympiad in Taiwan, joining 48 countries in the prestigious global challenge.
Sarah Harris from St. Ninian’s High School, Emma Corlett from Ballakermeen High School, and Brodie Millar from King William’s & The Buchan tackled complex linguistic puzzles testing logic and pattern recognition.
The event, hosted by the National Taiwan Normal University and supported by the Taiwan Ministry of Education, also included workshops, cultural excursions, and networking with over 400 young linguists.
Emma Corlett said: “Sarah and I both plan to study French and Linguistics at university, so this has been an amazing opportunity to stretch our skills.
“Meeting people from across the world who share our passion has been brilliant — and we hope to stay in touch as we begin our studies.”
Rob Teare, team leader, added: “The Isle of Man’s participation highlights our unique culture and language and is a great way to fly the Manx flag internationally.”
Since 2012, more than 50 Manx students have taken part in the IOL, selected through the regional Lingomann competition.
