Kirk Michael Taxis is calling for urgent reform of in‑vehicle CCTV rules after footage allegedly filmed inside a taxi on the Isle of Man circulated online.
The taxi firm issued a public statement after the footage circulated widely on social media and became the subject of an active police investigation.
The company stressed that the driver involved is not connected to its business, noting that it operates with a small team of long‑serving, well‑known local drivers.
It said professionalism and community trust remain central to its service.
Calls For CCTV
The incident has prompted the firm to renew calls for in‑vehicle CCTV, which it says is essential for passenger safety, driver protection and accountability. However, it says current data‑protection requirements make CCTV installation financially and administratively unworkable for small operators.
The company said the cost of encrypted hardware and the burden of managing sensitive data have forced it to pause plans to equip its fleet with cameras.
It is now urging the government and the Road Transport Licensing Committee to review regulations so that safety technology becomes accessible rather than “buried under unworkable bureaucracy”.
