The BIG Book of Magical Manx Tales, the latest title in the successful Manx Bedtime Stories Project, was officially launched last weekend.
Packed with imagination, folklore and heart, the book showcases the stories and illustrations of island youngsters with all proceeds from sales in aid of two vital local causes:
- The Children’s Ward at Noble’s Hospital
- Bridge the Gap, a charity dedicated to improving facilities and support for teenagers and young adults living with long-term health conditions.
The project is the brainchild of retired teacher and author Robert Cowley, former deputy head at St Ninian’s High School, who has now written seven charity-focused books championing themes from kindness to courage.
Creative Writing For Youngsters
For the second year in a row, he organised a creative writing competition which invited young storytellers and illustrators aged six to 13 to produce a 500-word bedtime story, accompanied by up to four illustrations.
With more than 80 entries, surpassing last year’s competition, the response was overwhelming with each published entrant receiving £20, as well as the honour of seeing their work published.
In keeping with the overall series, the stories each promote a positive moral message as entrants were asked to include a theme which highlighted qualities such as kindness, friendship, respect, courage or care for the planet.
Supporting Local Charities
“It has always been important to me that the books support local charities,” said Rob.
“Although the competition was again aimed at stimulating the imaginations of young people, I also wanted the stories to benefit young people at some of the most challenging times for them and their loved ones.
“The Children’s Ward was an obvious choice and Bridge the Gap is really unsung in literally helping bridge the gap between children’s and adult services. A sincere thank you to principal sponsor Dandara whose generous support has helped bring the project to life.
