The number of properties at risk from coastal flooding is expected to increase nearly fourfold over the next century, according to the government’s new strategy for Sea Defences, Flooding and Coastal Erosion for 2026-2036.
The 10-year plan aims to address escalating climate-related threats to communities and infrastructure.
Infrastructure Minister Dr. Michelle Haywood MHK said the strategy is a pivotal call to action.
“Flooding and coastal erosion are not distant threats. They are present realities that have shaped our Island’s past and will continue to challenge our future,” she said.
The minister emphasised the plan’s pragmatic vision is “to reduce risk as far as reasonably practicable”.
The document outlines severe economic risks, estimating that surface water flooding alone could cause £2.8 billion in damages over a 100-year period without intervention.
Fifteen key “Action Areas” have been prioritised for targeted investment, including Douglas, Ramsey, Laxey, Peel, and Castletown.
Building on over £11 million of investment since 2016 in defences for Castletown, Laxey, and Douglas, the new strategy commits to further long-term funding.
The strategy is due to go top Tynwald next month.
