The Isle of Man is celebrating its youngest ever Jiu-Jitsu European Champion, after 8 year old Theodore Sloane claimed victory at the IBJJF European Championships.
With competitors travelling from all over the world to compete at the event in Dublin, this competition is the biggest and toughest a junior competitor can do.
Theodore began in the Quarterfinals where he was matched with a more experienced opponent, but his calmness and confidence shone and he dominated his opponent to take a win on advantage after a clean cross collar choke attempt.
Points Win
In the Semifinals, Theo came back from being behind on points to score ahead of his opponent and keep the lead for the remainder of the match to take a points win.
In the Final, Theodore had to dig deep as he faced a very strong opponent. With there being no points or advantages scored by either fighter, the match went to referee decision where Theo was deemed the more attacking and dominant fighter and took the win, crowning him European Champion.
Also fighting at the competition was seasoned competitor Alan Greenhalgh. Having moved up in belt level 6 months ago, Alan faced his toughest outing in this very competitive yellow belt division.
Alan’s training and hard work showed on the mat where in the Semifinal he worked against a physical and active opponent, using his technical knowledge and strength to get to a dominant position and secure the win with a shoulder lock submission, forcing his opponent to tap out.
Closely Contested
In the Final, Alan faced the reigning champion where a very technically advanced match played out. Alan countered his opponents attacking style with pressure and composure, narrowly missing out on gold by advantages with no points being scored against him.
A closely contended title that resulted in Alan bringing home a well-earned silver medal.
