The Infrastructure Minister has confirmed that 47,060 vehicle licences were purchased at post offices in the last financial year.
The figures emerged after Jason Moorhouse MHK asked how many people had visited the Vehicle Test Centre (VTC) for a licence since April 1, 2025.
Tim Crookall MHK said the department does not hold any record of VTC footfall for licensing.
Moorhouse said the lack of data highlighted a wider issue: that when vehicle licensing was removed from Post Office counters, government had not established how many people depended on the service.
Crookall later provided the missing figures, confirming that in 2025/26:
- 47,060 licences were bought at post offices
- 46,324 were completed online
Moorhouse said the numbers showed why many people had struggled with the shift to the VTC.
Crookall said that in April this year, 78% of all driver and vehicle applications were completed online, with 22% submitted on paper, many from garages and traders.
He also noted that a support hub at the Sea Terminal saw little use, with most people still choosing to go to the VTC counter.
