Isle of Man athlete Regan Corrin continued his first Commonwealth Games with a battling top‑10 finish in the men’s high jump final at Scotstoun Stadium last night. The result was earned after a grueling double‑event day, late bar drops, and even a dispute over jump order.
Corrin came in to the event with a PB of 2.19m, having recently broken the long‑standing Manx high jump record. Despite already competing in the long jump earlier in the day, he carried that momentum straight into the evening session, opening with a smooth first‑time clearance at 1.95m.
He looked to have repeated the trick at 2.00m, appearing to clear the bar cleanly before it fell excruciatingly late, a moment that visibly frustrated him. “Yeah, I’m happy,” he said afterwards. “It’s not quite what I was looking for, but after this morning, I took a risk and it just happens.”
He reset quickly, nailed 2.00m on his second attempt, and briefly moved into a share of the leading contenders. The same pattern followed at 2.05m, where he again needed two attempts but kept himself firmly in the mix.
Between jumps, Corrin was seen in what appeared to be ‘tense’ discussions with officials after seemingly being called to jump out of order, disrupting his rhythm at a crucial stage of the competition.
The next height, 2.10m, proved decisive. Corrin cleared it cleanly, even celebrated (as did we cheer in the Media Tribunes) before the bar crashed down after what seemed like an eternity. It was another cruel late drop that ended his progression. Asked whether the windy conditions played a role, he refused to lean on excuses: “Yeah, of course, but it’s the same for everyone… it’s not something I can put it down to.”
Despite the setbacks, Corrin remained proud of what he produced under intense physical and mental pressure. “No, I’m not disappointed,” he said. “I left everything out on there. The effort I put in this morning to come back in the same day with a short turnaround… there’s nothing else I could have done. I’ve done my best. And that’s it.”
Corrin’s Commonwealth debut showcased his resilience, competitive edge and ability to perform against world‑class opposition all signs that his ceiling is still rising. This young athlete was a pleasure to watch and talk to after the event.
After two events in a day and the disappointment of the dropped poles, the last thing a young athlete would probably want to do is walk through the mixed zone and face scrutiny by the media. But Corrin carried out his post-event interviews with the island’s press pack with professionalism and nobility.
