Tynwald members have rejected a bid from Speaker Juan Watterson to delay a decision on a proposed new minimum wage.
Members had been debating a motion from Julie Edge and amendment by Chief Minister Alf Cannan when Mr Watterson moved his motion to adjourn.
Mr Watterson said he could “live with” Ms Edge’s original motion to rise the minimum wage by set at 5%, rather than 9.9%, in April, followed by a second rise in November.
However, he said this would not allow workers or businesses to see the full package of pay rise, threshold changes and support packages before a decision was made.
Members supporting the bid called on the government to tell them how much their support packages or threshold changes will make, which didn’t happen.
However, despite support from some members, it was defeated following a passionate rebuke from the Chief Minister, Ms Edge and others with only eight MHKs voting in favour.
