A new island‑wide passport scheme encouraging people to use simple Manx words and phrases has been launched as part of the Year of the Manx Language.
The Mannin Aboo Passport, meaning “Hurray for the Isle of Man”, is free to pick up with colourful booklets already sent home via primary schools and available at locations across the island.
Passport holders are challenged to visit participating shops, cafés, cultural venues and heritage sites over the summer and use a Manx greeting while they’re there.
Staff will give out a stamp in return, with 18 to collect across three categories: Shop (Shapp), Culture (Cultoor) and Food & Drink (Bee as Jough).
Once completed, passports can be sealed and posted back to Culture Vannin to enter an autumn prize draw.
Prizes include an Isle of Man Steam Packet voucher, family heritage tickets, Manx‑word jewellery and food and drink treats donated by participating businesses.
Year of the Manx Language Coordinator Tiffany Kerruish said the scheme aims to make Manx more visible and more natural in daily life, adding that even small greetings such as Moghrey mie or Gura mie ayd help keep the language alive.
