Three Manx robotics teams are heading to the UK regional finals of the World Robotics Olympiad in June, and Code Club is calling on businesses to help get them there.
The students earned their place after the island’s first-ever robotics final in December, where young engineers showcased advanced skills in designing, building and programming autonomous robots.
They will now compete in Edinburgh for a chance to represent the UK on the international stage.
The teams span elementary, junior and senior categories. The younger groups are competing with LEGO Spike robotics platforms, while the senior team has built a fully custom robot featuring 3D‑printed components, an Arduino Mega, bespoke power systems and stepper motor drivers, all programmed in C/C++.
Real Engineering
“This is real engineering,” said Owen Cutajar, Chair and Trustee of Code Club. “These students aren’t just learning, they’re designing, building and solving complex problems at a level well beyond their years.”
The event, organised by WRO partner STEMpura, is seen as a major opportunity to showcase the island’s growing digital and engineering talent. To make the trip possible, Code Club is seeking sponsorship to support travel and accommodation costs.
Owen added: “You’re not just funding a trip, you’re investing in the future talent of the Isle of Man.”
