Views Sought on Changes to Housing Income Rules

The Housing Agency has launched a public consultation on proposed updates to income thresholds and other criteria used to allocate public sector housing.

The review forms part of a wider overhaul of the Public Sector Housing (General Needs) (Allocation) Policy 2019.

While that full review is still underway, officials are seeking feedback on a set of early amendments aimed at improving fairness and consistency in how homes are allocated.

The consultation focuses on three main proposals: raising income eligibility thresholds with automatic annual adjustments, removing certain priority points that are no longer seen as accurate indicators of housing need, and giving local housing authorities more discretion around residential requirements.

Infrastructure Minister Tim Crookall MHK said the Department wants to ensure that lived experiences are reflected in policy development, noting that data alone cannot capture the realities faced by applicants and tenants.

According to the Department, public input will help identify unintended consequences, test whether the proposals are workable for households, and ensure the policy reflects local needs and values.

Feedback will inform the final draft amendments before they are presented to Tynwald for approval.

The consultation is now open, and residents are encouraged to take part by completing the online survey.
