We Have to Have the Right Housing

Ensuring that the island builds the right types of properties will be a key to meeting future housing need.

The Housing and Communities Board has committed to facilitating 1,000 new affordable homes by 2035, with a focus on addressing the needs of vulnerable groups, including older generations seeking to downsize.

Chair David Ashford, responding to a question from Manx Labour Party leader Joney Faragher, said: “Ensuring that we build the right types of properties will be a key goal.”

He highlighted collaboration with the DHSC to understand specific needs, saying its findings “will be used to inform the work of the new Housing Agency”.

Need

The Agency, launching in September under the DoI, will review public sector housing allocations with a “renewed focus upon addressing housing need”.

Mr Ashford however says that the increase in affordable housing “will only be one part of the answer”, emphasising broader efforts to boost supply.

The Cabinet Office is reviewing the island’s Strategic Plan to meet forecasted demand, with consultation open until October 27.
