A Canadian new-media outlet has been on the island trying to find out more about a company they claim had links to the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Rebel News, which has almost two million subscribers, flew to the island to find out more about a Manx registered company called ‘Brookfield (IOM)’ Limited.
The company is registered at Companies House in the UK as an overseas entity and is registered in the Isle of Man at an address in Onchan.
In the news piece the reporter, Ezra Levant goes to a property in Onchan in the hope of tracking down the company’s named official.
The official company records in the island, show that Brookfield (IOM) Limited is registered in a top floor flat in Belgravia Road. The named official, who is also listed as the person with more than 25% ownership and voting rights, is an 88 year old island resident.
In the article that accompanies the video, Levant writes:
I’m writing to you from a tax haven called the Isle of Man. I’ve never seen any place quite like it. It’s a little island between Ireland and the UK, home to 85,000 people. And it’s famous for two things: its annual motorcycle race, and billionaires avoiding their taxes.
That’s why I’m here: because two and a half years ago Mark Carney set up a shell company to avoid paying taxes in Canada. The Isle of Man has very few taxes — no capitals gains tax, no inheritance tax, no wealth tax. Income tax is just 22%. Corporate taxes are 10% or less.
The video goes on to explore Carney’s link to the company and questions which jurisdiction the new Canadian PM paid his own tax.
