When is Temporary Not Temporary

Half of the temporary classrooms at the island’s schools have been in place for at least 20 years.

David Ashford (Douglas North) asked for a breakdown of how many of the, officially named, mobile classrooms there were and when they were installed.

Education Minister Daphne Cane said: “Across the Department’s primary and secondary school estate there are 16 single classroom mobiles and 12 double classroom mobiles, providing 40 classrooms in use by DESC.”

The longest serving of the mobile classrooms is at Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, which has been in place since before 1990.

Braddan hosts the next longest serving temporary classroom, dating to 1994, while Peel Clothworkers’ one was installed in 2001.

The first of the classrooms to be installed at the island’s high school were at Ballakermeen and Ramsey Grammar School in 2002.
