Why is Mental Health Spending Going Down?

An MHK wants to know why the allocated government spending on mental health looks set to be down on last year.

David North MHK, who is also the Speaker of the House of Keys, has submitted a question for written answer to Health Minister Claire Christian.

Referring to the Budget “Pink Book”, he asks: “What accounts for the approximately £2.5 million reduction between the 2025/26 probable expenditure and 2026/27 budget for Mental Health Services in Table 39 of the Pink Book; what changes in expenditure allocation or accounting treatment explain that difference; and what effect on the delivery of mental health services it had?”

The listed probable net spending on mental health for 2025/26 is £33.516 million. But the budgeted gross spend for 2026/27 is £31.023 million.

As it is a written question, Christian has until November 9 to respond.
