Women’s Football Roundup: Fairytale Continues for Douglas & District

Douglas & District’s dream start in their debut season in the Canada Life Women’s League continued on Sunday after defeating Rushen Utd 6-2 at Noble’s Park.

The newcomers have now secured their third win of the season, moving onto the same number of points as Corinthians in the league with nine, just three points of table-toppers Douglas Royal.

It was a youthful side fielded by the Douglas side, consisting of a number of age group graduates, including eight players aged 20 or younger.

The southerners took a two goal lead courtesy of a Lucy Kerr brace, before Evie Anderson instigated the D&D fightback just before the half hour mark. Ameila Griffiths netted the equaliser on the stroke of half-time, and despite playing up the slope in the second half, doubles for Liv Davis and Lucy Dunn secured the points for the home side.

Douglas Royal maintained pole position with an emphatic 13-2 win over Onchan at Ballafletcher. Rebecca Cole (4), Ariana Roberts (2), Sarah O’Reilly, Ellie Warren, Gemma Kirkham, Zoe Hawley, Caitlyn Smith and Kayleigh Georgeson all netted on a free-scoring afternoon for the hosts. There was no news of Onchan’s goalscorers when going to press.

The remaining match involving Union Mills and Peel was called off due to Mills being unable to field a team.
