The Department of Infrastructure has spent £9.3 million on Facilities Management staff supporting Manx Care since 2021, new Treasury figures confirm.
The spending covers around 46 full‑time equivalent staff maintaining Manx Care’s estate.
The figures were released after Onchan MHK Julie Edge asked Treasury Minister Chris Thomas for a full breakdown of centralised government services provided to Manx Care since its inception.
Additional Manx Care Costs
In his written reply, the Treasury Minister said the data includes only costs that can be directly attributed or recharged, adding: “Other staff may provide some level of support to Manx Care however they also support other departments and bodies. As such, it is not possible to allocate the salary costs of these staff accurately.”
Treasury’s Financial Advisory Service and Finance Shared Services together account for more than £3.3 million in staff costs over the period.
The Minister confirmed: “No contractor costs have been incurred by Treasury relating to Manx Care in the period from the inception of Manx Care to date.”
He also stated: “Treasury has not recharged any sums to Manx Care through the sales ledger in the period from the inception of Manx Care to date.”
Dedicated Staff
The Attorney General’s Chambers reported £1.46 million in staff costs for legal work carried out on behalf of Manx Care, covering family proceedings, clinical negligence and other advisory work.
A dedicated employment lawyer has also been seconded to Manx Care, with the budget transferred for the duration of the secondment.
The Department of Infrastructure outlined extensive support beyond facilities. Bus Vannin employs an estimated 27 FTEs for the Patient Transfer Service, costing around £1 million a year, a pressure the department does not recharge.
Facilities Management has recharged £4.7 million in works to Manx Care since 2021.
The Cabinet Office reported rising OHR staffing dedicated to Manx Care, totalling £1.42 million in staff costs since 2021, alongside project‑related recharges from Government Transformation Services.
