Corrin Leeming’s win in yesterday’s Syd Quirk Half Marathon broke Ollie Lockley’s record by 14 seconds with a brilliant time of 1:06:04.
He won by an amazing margin of nine minutes and 17 seconds.
The big winning margin should in no way detract from the quality of the performances throughout the rest of the field – it is simply a reflection of how good Corrin is.
There was some very close and competitive racing and numerous personal best times were set.
Half Marathon
Paul Atherton took second place with a strong finish, and equally strong was Phil Knox who passed Mark Burman in the closing stages to take third spot.
An athlete I somehow missed in my preview of the event was Harry Kneen who had a great run for fifth spot and the leading junior.
He very nearly caught Mark at the end. Andy Nash, Liam Parker and Joel Smith followed.
Mike Garrett, an outstanding V55 athlete, produced a fantastic finish to catch and pass women’s winner Christa Cain, who beat her course best time set last year by exactly one minute with 1:17:42.
She consolidates her position as the fourth fastest woman on the course behind Sarah Webster, Gemma Astin and the late Brenda Walker.
Walk Win
Finishing just behind Christa having started at 8am was Callum Gawne who came in to win the walk in a really excellent time of 1:47:52, ranking him the seventh fastest male competitor on the course.
Having finished joint second in the Parish Walk and winning the End to End, this has been a wonderful year for him.
In addition to Christa Cain, Kirsty Barber and Dawn Atherton both achieved Island Games A standards – Kirsty for the second time, Dawn for the first with a big pb.
The 2019 Island Games 400 metres champion Ashleigh Lachenicht demonstrated what a fine all-round athlete she is by setting a time just 13 seconds outside the A standard in her debut Half Marathon.
After some years away from competition she proved again how good she is.
Neil Wade and Gianni Epifani were second and third in the men’s walk, while Lorna Gleave won the women’s race to complete the Parish/End to End/Syd Quirk treble for the second consecutive year.
Former winners Marie Jackson and Jayne Farquhar were second and third.
