The DoI is to make safety improvements to the Mountain Road between the 33rd Milestone and Kate’s Cottage which will include a full closure for four weeks over Easter.
A decision has been made to programme this stretch of road to be resurfaced and re-profiled to improve the condition of the carriageway and road safety.
Surveying will take place in December, when there will be a series of daytime closures between the Brandywell Road and Creg Ny Baa Back Road junctions.
The closures will be between 9:30am and 4:30pm, Monday-Tuesday 2-3 December, Monday-Tuesday 9-10 December, Monday-Tuesday 16-17 December, with additional contingency dates of Wednesday 11 and Wednesday 18 December.
Spring
Construction work is programmed to start on Monday March 31 and is anticipated to take four weeks to complete.
This work will require a 24/7 road closure between the Bungalow and Creg Ny Baa, which includes the Easter period.
The DoI said: “In addition to surfacing works, it is intended to excavate the road surface to replace collapsed stone culverts below the carriageway between Keppel Gate and Kate’s Cottage.
“These culverts currently do not operate at capacity, which is contributing to surface water on the road at Kate’s Cottage and increasing the risk of ice causing hazardous winter driving conditions.”
Why Spring?
The weather typically experienced on the Mountain Road precludes planned construction work over the winter months.
Ideally resurfacing would be done in the height of summer, but the two race periods and the need for newly surfaced roads to be run in for a time before they are raced on, means that May to August is unavailable.
While it would be possible to wait until next autumn, it has been decided that it is better to make the improvements to the road as soon as possible.
Access to the Victory Cafe and Creg ny Baa will be maintained through the works.
