Pedestrianising North Quay in Douglas during intervals last year was ‘very good’ for businesses in the area and provided opportunities for collaboration.
That’s the view of Okell’s Inns which says it would like to see the scheme – which saw the area shut to traffic over TT and summer weekends – continued.
Douglas Council is looking to trial permanent pedestrianisation of the area.
Opportunities for Collaboration
The council will be consulting businesses, customers and residents in the area before it puts anything in place permanently.
However it believes during the summer of 2024 the area was a ‘success’ which North Quay hospitality businesses are ‘eager’ to build on.
Jason Lowe, Area Manager for Okell’s Inns and Chris the General Manager of The British, say a lot of it is ‘weather dependent’.
But they would be happy to see it trialled further:
Leader of Douglas Council Claire Wells and Councillor Devon Watson say they would like to see how they can make the area better for the community.
After the vote was passed in December Councillor Wells and Councillor Watson said creating these types of public community spaces were ‘essential’:
