Islanders have expressed only very moderate levels of happiness and satisfaction with life, and there, according to the latest social attitudes survey,
The survey found that there is some evidence that people under 40 may be less happy and less satisfied with life than older age groups, which is fairly consistent with other similar countries.
Published by the government, the survey said the difference in happiness between age groups has been explained by some as being “caused by greater financial and housing insecurity for younger people as well as a greater sense of anxiety concerning global affairs”.
It adds: “Results of this survey might support part of this, in that almost a quarter of people report securing access to housing as being difficult or very difficult, and nearly one in five people state that finding suitable employment is similarly challenging.”
Trust
Trust in politics is said to be “relatively low compared with what might be hoped for”, but comparable to neighbouring jurisdictions.
Of all institutions considered, local authorities, MHKs and the civil service received the highest, though still low, levels of trust, while the “Council of Ministers and the Legislative Council received the lowest”.
Public satisfaction scored even lower, while “a large number of people feel that the political system (as distinct from the government) does not satisfy principles they regard as important” and is inaccessible.
Snapshots
Overall islanders are welcome of inward migration, saying it support the economy, while 80% of people are supportive of the rights of gay and lesbian people.
There is also “moderate to large” levels of trust for the legal system and the emergency services.
