The Keys have backed a motion by Onchan Julie Edge to ensure pension reforms are debated separately from next week’s Budget.
Ms Edge’s motion called for the proposal in the report Future Uprating of the Manx State Pension not to be implemented as part of the Treasury budget process.
The Onchan MHK said that the proposals could see UK born pensioners receive higher payments than Manx born pensioners saying it was “both unacceptable and deeply unfair”
She added: “I refuse to allow this proposal to be buried in the small print of the budget, and that is why I stand here today.
“I appreciate that we do have a separate to operate in order to debate until more on Budget day, but that does not give the people of the Isle of Man opportunity to have their say and full debate on the impacts of scrapping the triple lock.”
Following a debate where several members criticised the way the government has communicated and consulted over the plans, Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson said he would support the motion, signalling that the green light had been given for the block vote.
An amendment by Kate Lord-Brennan that no changes to the triple lock policy should be made or proposed for confirmation at the February 2025 sitting of Tynwald and that a public discussion and consultation is carried out before bringing a policy proposal for Tynwald debate and approval by June 2025, was rejected 13-11.
