Arbory and Rushen Parish Commissioners has condemned the DoI’s decision to permanently withdraw Bus Vannin’s service to Cregneash.
The route was cut with the DoI citing a lack of passengers.
The local authority said that despite efforts to seek alternatives, the DoI “proceeded without meaningful consultation”.
The Road Transport Licensing Committee has also confirmed that it cannot legally compel Bus Vannin to retain the route, with the board calling this “a clear failure of joined-up government.”
Commission Chair Peter Gunn said: “We are dismayed that such a vital route has been allowed to disappear without proper consultation, without engagement with the local authorities most affected, and without recognition of the growing demand from both residents and tourists.
“This is a short-sighted decision that undermines rural connectivity, the local economy, and the Island’s own tourism strategy.”*
Cregneash and the Sound are key heritage and tourism sites, yet the seasonal bus link, critical for access, has been scrapped. Meanwhile, Niarbyl, currently without a café and with limited seasonal use, retains regular services.
“The disparity is baffling,” Mr Gunn continued. “It feels as though key decisions are being made in silos, without any coordination between departments like Visit Isle of Man, Business Isle of Man, and Bus Vannin.
“We call on the department to engage immediately with all affected parties to find a workable, affordable solution.”
