Peter Hickman has confirmed a mechanical failure was the cause of his crash during this year’s TT.
He provided fans with an update on his condition and thanked everyone for their support, especially the marshals and medics who helped him.
The 14-time TT winner crashed at Kerrowmoar during lap one of the Friday evening qualifying session, which was subsequently red-flagged.
Hickman detailed his injuries, saying: “I’ve broken my left collarbone, my left scapula, so my shoulder blade down the back is in three pieces. I broke three ribs and four vertebrae in my back. So not ideal.”
He praised the responders, adding: “They did a fantastic job. Really looked after me.”
Unconscious
The star also revealed that the crash left him unconscious. “I don’t remember much about it, because I was knocked out. I don’t remember the lap leading up to it. In fact, the first time I properly woke up, I woke up in hospital,” he admitted.
Explaining the cause, Hickman said: “Unfortunately, was a component failure. So it wasn’t actually my fault, which the team are doing some more analysis on at the minute, but it wasn’t actually, wasn’t the fairing like what was speculated about.
“It wasn’t oil either, and a lot of people thought they saw smoke. Unfortunately, was a some bracketry that holds the exhaust in place didn’t come loose. It broke in theory and pushed the exhaust into the rear wheel and popped the rear tire.”
The rider thanked his team and fans, saying: “I just want to say a massive thanks to Marshalls, medics, all the staff, the organisers, and, of course, all you guys back home, the fans.”
