Authorities’ Contrasting Views on Iceland Plan

Douglas Council has objected to plans for a new Food Warehouse by Iceland opening in Braddan.

The authority says the proposed retail warehouse on the Spring Valley Industrial Estate breaches fundamental planning policies for the area.

The Council’s Environmental Services Committee voted to object to the plans as they are “contrary to The Area Plan for the East land zoning for the Spring Valley Industrial Estate which is zoned for industrial use” whereas the application is for a retail development.

It said: “Douglas City Council is not against the Iceland group opening a retail unit on the island however any new store must be situated on land or within an area that complies with the relevant planning policies.”

While supportive in principle, Braddan Commissioners have raised significant traffic safety concerns.

In its submission, it noted: “There have been a number of road traffic incidents at that junction over recent times.” It also highlighted that the vacant units being replaced “did not have the high volume of users this facility is likely to have”.
