Record-breaking cyclist Matthew Richardson will be the special guest at this month’s Mezzo Isle of Man Sports Awards.
The 26-year-old sprinter made history last week by becoming the first British man to win the sprint title at the European Track Cycling Championships in Turkey.
He went on to claim a second gold medal in the keirin and added silver in the team sprint, capping a standout championship performance.
Cycling Star
Richardson, who holds the men’s 200m flying lap world record, has already built an impressive career with medals at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
Widely regarded as one of Britain’s brightest cycling talents, he began representing Great Britain in August 2024.
Born in Maidstone, Kent, Richardson moved to Western Australia at the age of nine. He initially excelled in gymnastics before turning to cycling as a teenager following an injury.
Manx Visit
Speaking ahead of the event, Richardson said he was looking forward to his first visit to the Isle of Man and to experiencing its “deep sporting roots”.
Education, Sport and Culture Minister Daphne Caine MHK said his appearance would inspire athletes and fans, offering a rare opportunity to hear from one of the sport’s most exciting stars.
The awards ceremony takes place on Thursday, February 26, with hundreds of sports fans expected to attend.
