Manx Utilities has applied for a Certificate of Lawfulness regarding the Three Legs feature on North Barrule.
The Triskelion, formed from painted stones on the hillside, has been a feature since being installed by Bryan Callister.
Manx Utilities says it “recognises the strength of feeling and public interest in the future management of the site”.
This process allows the planning authority to consider whether the feature is lawful under planning legislation, rather than seeking permission for any new works.
The feature was repainted on multiple occasions without Manx Utilities’ permission, prompting complaints and raising questions about planning compliance.
Manx Utilities has said it “remains neutral regarding the presence of the Triskelion”.
The decision to seek certification was informed by strong community support for retaining the symbol, previous backing from Lezayre Commissioners and a desire to “discourage further unauthorised repainting by ensuring a clear, formal process is followed”.
While the application is processed, Manx Utilities will install signage confirming the stones are on private property.
