The DOI says it cannot yet publish the results of its recent consultation on penalties for causing death by dangerous driving, citing ongoing legal considerations.
The update came in a written response to Rushen MHK Dr Michelle Haywood, who asked when the findings would be released and when new legislation would be brought forward.
The consultation, which ran from December 12, 2025 to January 23, 2026, focused on maximum sentences for two offences under the Road Traffic Act 1985: causing death by dangerous driving, and causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.
Although government policy normally requires consultation responses to be published within 12 weeks, Minister for Infrastructure Tim Crookall said the Department is currently unable to release any commentary received.
Officials are exploring whether an interim overview can be issued in the meantime.
A full response will only be published once the Department is legally able to do so, and no revised timetable has been set.
However, Mr Crookall said he hopes to bring forward legislation on the matter before the end of the year.
