Isle of Man Samaritans is encouraging people to recognise the importance of mental health and wellbeing ahead of World Mental Health Day.
This year’s campaign theme, “real experiences heard: real voice, real change”, focuses on ensuring people with lived experience of mental health conditions are meaningfully involved in shaping the policies, services and decisions that affect their lives.
The World Health Organisation has highlighted the value of lived experience in helping influence change and improve decision-making, with this year’s campaign calling for those voices to be heard more widely.
Making Sure People Are Heard
Deana Douglas, Branch Director at Isle of Man Samaritans, said she hoped the theme would offer a different perspective on mental health and help ensure people with lived experience are heard where it matters.
She said: “There are far too many times when people with lived experiences are asked to share their experiences and stories but then they are excluded from any decision making, so we hope this campaign will help bring change.”
The charity, which works to prevent suicide through the power of human connection, is also reminding anyone who is struggling that support is available around the clock by calling 116 123.
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage support for those affected.
