The DoI is seeking permission to reopen a temporary car park on the Summerland site for a period of 18 months.
A planning application has been submitted for the creation of 32 marked spaces, including two enlarged disabled bays, using the same vehicular access off King Edward Road that was approved for a previous temporary car park in 2019.
In its planning statement, the DoI said it “continues to receive expressions of interest from parties who may wish to develop the site”, but in the interim is “approached regularly by individuals and organisations seeking permission to park vehicles on the southern part of the site”.
It noted that businesses in the area report customers “frequently voice concerns about the lack of car parking”, adding that the northern end of Douglas Promenade “does not offer sufficient car parking on the adopted highways to serve the businesses in this area, particularly during the periods when trams are running regularly”.
The Chief Engineer for Public Transport supports the application, stating that it is “crucial for MER and Horse Trams customers to have access to local car parking, particularly during summer months”.
No overnight parking would be permitted, with vehicles limited to a maximum stay of 12 hours.
