Action to Fix Peel Pong

Peel Sewage treatment plans

Manx Utilities has announced action to address long-standing odour issues on two Peel estates.

The smell has been traced to two private wastewater infrastructure serving the Reayrt Ny Keylley and Reayrt Ny Cronk estates.

It has led to repeated complaints resident about “unbearable” smells that have made some residents feel physically sick in their own homes .

Manx Utilities is coordinating with Dandara on a priority plan to clean out privately-owned treatment works and jet the local sewer network to remove septic sludge believed to be causing the odours .

The work will utilise Manx Utilities’ tanker fleet in partnership with Dandara, with costs shared between the parties .

Odours

During the operation, Manx Utilities has advised that odours may temporarily intensify while septic sludge is removed.

To minimise disruption, no weekend work is planned and operations will be scheduled during less favourable weather conditions when more residents are likely to be indoors .

Manx Utilities records indicate 26 odour complaints from Peel areas since 2010, with the highest number (nine) recorded in 2017 .

Long-Term Solution

The interim measures come as construction continues on the £40m Peel Wastewater Treatment Works, which began earlier this year and is scheduled to become operational in 2027 .

This regional facility will render the current private treatment works redundant once it begins treating wastewater flows from the area .
