The number of employees in the Attorney General’s Chambers rose from 75 to 87 between March 2024 and March 2025.
Attorney General Walter Wannenburgh confirmed the increase included filling previously vacant posts, limited-term appointments, and additional resources for the civil litigation division, as recommended by the Right Report.
Responding to a question from Jason Moorhouse MHK, Wannenburgh stated: “No employees were paid salaries above the market rate.”
He added that no bonuses were awarded during the period. One staff member received a benefit in kind—a day’s pay to mark a 10-year civil service anniversary.
Additional payments were limited to reimbursements for approved travel and subsistence expenses.
Mr Moorhouse pressed for clarity on whether market rates referenced local or international benchmarks.
Mr Wannenburgh clarified that independent recruitment consultants had set the rates, factoring in comparisons with other jurisdictions.
