Beach Buddies has reported a ‘rotten’ discovery at one of its bins, after a bag of decomposing whelks was dumped at the bottom of the Glen Mooar bin.
The charity, which empties more than 50 bins around the island every 7 to 10 days, said the bin was otherwise full of the usual beach‑clean rubbish, thanks to the regular volunteers who look after that stretch of coast.
But the moment the team opened their truck door, the smell made it clear something was badly wrong.
At the bottom of the bin they found an orange net bag packed with rotten whelks, which they believe had been left there for at least a week.
The stench, they said, was detectable from “20-30 yards”.
Think Twice
Beach Buddies said the whelks should have been returned to the sea rather than left to rot in a community bin designed for litter collected from the shoreline.
In a strongly worded message, the charity said the incident showed how “some people dis‑engage their brains or simply don’t care”, adding that whoever dumped the whelks would likely defend themselves by saying they “put it in the bin”.
The charity urged the person responsible to “think twice next time”, stressing that emptying the bins is already an unpleasant but essential job that helps maintain the island’s reputation for some of the cleanest beaches in the world.
