The Minister for Enterprise, Tim Johnston MHK, told the House of Keys today (March 19) that the Ben my Chree is restricted to a maximum of 48% of its normal operating power output.
According to the Minister, the vessel currently has a short term International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate (IAPP), in which the power restriction is imposed to comply with emission requirements of new Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) Regulations.

Chris Thomas MHK asked the Minister for Enterprise, “What conditions and limitations are imposed by the Ben My Chree’s International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate; and what the consequences of breaching these outside Isle of Man and UK harbours would be.”
The Minister added that he understands that the “EEXI calculation, made by the vessels’ Classification Society, contains some inaccuracies leading to this reduced power availability”.
Adding: “However, as soon as the recalculation has been completed the IAPP restriction will be revised or removed, whichever may be appropriate.
“This restriction applies to the vessel no matter where it may be and should the vessel breach the limits of its IAPP certification, without having permission of the local Port State, the vessel could potentially be detained in that port, fined or possibly both.”
