The government has released an update on the progress of the ‘Securing Our Island’ strategy, detailing advancements in security and law enforcement.
A number of key objectives have already been achieved, while others remain in progress are awaiting consultation.
Part of the progress has seen port policing transferred to the Isle of Man Constabulary, while Automatic Number Plate Recognition legislation is now in place and drug dogs are deployed at all main sea and air arrival points.
Proactive scanning of postal items has led to the recovery of several thousand pounds in cash and thousands of pounds-worth of drugs.
Passenger
Law enforcement now has routine access to passenger manifest data, Proceeds of Crime legislation is being actively used and the Steam Packet has stopped accepting cash for travel.
Work continues in other areas, with access to police systems for Customs and Immigration officers nearing completion, a Bill to enable police use of live facial recognition is being prepared for consultation and immigration processes are being strengthened.
Future objectives include engaging with airlines for automated passenger data collection, working with the UK on travel information, and increasing scrutiny of private aircraft and boats.
Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Jane Poole-Wilson said: “We have completed a number of objectives and we have progressed many more, demonstrating continued success in the journey towards our goals as set out in the Securing Our Island Strategy.”
She added: “Our strategy must continue to be supported by action. Work in a number of areas is continuing, and we have also identified other areas of work, including further data sharing on Island and with the UK.”
