The DoI has confirmed an extension to the closure of a section of the Raad ny Foillan until the end of May.
The route, on the former railway line through Orrisdale in Michael, is currently closed while the Department replaces the decks of two former rail bridges.
A post on Facebook explained that while the original bridge structures remain in place, the decks had been replaced many years ago with much narrower wooden structures.
The DoI said a decision had been taken to install wider, stronger decks.
“The opportunity to install wider, stronger decks to both improve facilities for PROW users, but to also allow the passage of maintenance vehicles such as a tractor and flail, to allow a much more efficient method of maintaining this PROW for public use,” the post stated.
The old wooden decks have already been removed, leaving both bridges impassable.
The post noted that while heavier duty wooden beams were initially planned to support the new decks, further inspections during the works have led to a change.
“Further inspections during the course of these works have indicated that steel beams are a more appropriate solution,” the update confirmed.
“These are on order and will be installed shortly.”
PROW users are advised to continue following the diversion plan attached to the department’s post until the works are complete.
