Treasury Minister Chris Thomas used the Manx.News Budget debate to set out a positive vision for restoring stability to the island’s public finances.
Mr Thomas says the new Budget represents a “turning point” in how government manages money.
Thomas said the island has “never had a problem spending money, the problem is getting the income to match that,” and argued that this year’s plan begins the work of bringing spending back under control.
Realistic Framework
He described the Budget as a realistic framework that gives departments clearer limits and expectations, particularly around health, where he said a “hard constraint” is now in place.
He highlighted the increase in personal tax allowances as a meaningful step for households, saying it shows government can support people while still taking a disciplined approach to the public finances.
Thomas also stressed the importance of better forecasting and more accurate data, telling the panel that improved financial control will help government make stronger long‑term decisions.
Throughout the discussion, Thomas positioned the Budget as a responsible reset, one that aims to protect essential services, rebuild confidence in government spending, and put the island on a more sustainable path.
