Contingency funding will be held by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC) to assist regional swimming pools.
The Department will hold £350,000 to assist the pools if needed, which I for one hope be spread evenly across all regional pools.
The announcement around accelerating the development of Castle Rushen High School through the funding from the Project Development Fund thats supported within the capital programme.
Regional pools and CRHS
The Gov hope to have the Castle Rushen High School (CRHS) building works underway by 2025 – 2028.
Although in the budget there is very little about a swimming pool at the new CRHS site as the regional pool strategy is to be confirmed.
The timetable for the pool is indicative, assumes standardised UK Dept for Education designs and specs, procurement processes.
Along with no complications with the site, processes, approvals.
Although a replacement sports facility isn’t estimated to be completed until 2030.
An on-Island contractor capability is a key factor, although main school may be possible but pool element may require different procurement.
Southern Pool
In January the Southern Pools life was seriously under threat. Although a lifeline was found, for now.
At the time, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, Julie Edge MHK said: “I acknowledge this has been a very difficult period and I would like to recognise the work that has taken place within the community to present a workable plan.
“I am sure all parties will acknowledge that the Southern Pool is coming to the end of its economic life and we are all looking to minimise the gap between failure of the current facilities and the development of a replacement pool.”

“I will be seeking to clarify our future plans for a swimming pool as part of the new Castle Rushen High School development to the House of Keys on Tuesday.
“I remain committed to working with all the regional pool boards and local stakeholders. I hope to meet with the Southern Board in the near future. I will be also seeking clarification from the Northern and Western swimming pool boards with regards to their respective financial position,” Minister Edge said.
