One of the island’s most familiar faces has been presented with his MBE at a reception at Government House.
Stephen Carter CP, MEB, was presented with the award by Sir John Lorrimer at a ceremony with his friends and family.
Appointed Marine Pilot for the Isle of Man in 1994, Captain Carter oversaw more than 4,500 vessel movements in 29 years of service in order to maintain a vital lifeline to the island.
He also helped keep the Port of Liverpool open, by providing boarding facilities for any pilots that were required by vessels entering or leaving the River Mersey, when weather conditions prevented routine transfers.
Searching
Captain Carter was also involved in searches for missing vessels and personnel of the Isle of Man, including assisting and advising during the raising of the wreck of the Solway Harvester, which sank off the Isle of Man in 2000.
Also taking up a number of volunteer roles throughout his time living in Laxey, Captain Carter was appointed as Captain of the Parish of Lonan in 2019.
Government House said: “It was a wonderful evening where family and friends were able to come together to celebrate these incredible achievements. Congratulations on your MBE, Captain Carter! The Isle of Man, as a whole, is very proud.”
