Carolanne Battles Illness to Complete Great Scottish Run

Carolanne Hanley of Northern AC produced a determined performance in the Great Scottish Run 10K in Glasgow on Sunday.

She battled through the lingering effects of illness to complete the race in cold, wet and windy conditions.

Carolanne had been very unwell during the previous week, which inevitably affected her performance.

She was also returning from a recent injury and consequently found the race considerably tougher than usual. The conditions became particularly unpleasant during the second half, with rain and strong winds from around 5km onwards.

Fantastic Achievement

Despite the setbacks, Carolanne was delighted simply to finish and “survive” the race. She normally expects to be around the 90-minute mark for this type of event, making her performance very creditable given the circumstances.

The race was her fourth Great Scottish Run and her third appearance in the 10K, having also contested the half marathon many years ago.

Carolanne puts a lot back into athletics as an organiser for Northern AC, helping to ensure that others have the opportunity to compete. On this occasion, simply reaching the finish line was an achievement in itself — and a great effort after a difficult week!
