Sir Mark Cavendish has said he can barely believe his record breaking 35th Tour de France win.

The Manx Missile run the 177.4 km route from Saint Jean De Maurienne to Saint Vulbas to break the record he held jointly with Eddy Merckx.

Speaking after the race, Sir Cav said he was in “disbelief”.

He added: “It was a big gamble for my boss and the team. You have to go all-in and we have done it. We did exactly what we wanted to do. Every little detail has been put towards specifically today.”

Fellow Manxman and Olympic gold medalist Peter Kennaugh said: “The way he reads it and the way he is able to find the small gaps is incredible”.

British Cycling tweeted to call him simply “cycling’s greatest ever sprinter”.

Remarking on his 15th tour, race director Christian Prudhomme said he thought Cav was finished “seven years ago, but he’s still here”.

He added: “He is the best and he is the yellow jersey of the sprinters.”

Meanwhile, tomorrow’s race is a sprint finish, he couldn’t, could he?
