Garff Commissioners believe a consultation into waste management is asking leading questions and that a centralised service would lead to a drop in standards.
Currently loal authorities handle most if not all bin collections.
However, a proposal for an Isle of Man Waste Strategy, which would run into the middle of the next decade.
The consultation says: “Consideration of a centralised hub for waste recycling and potentially centralisation of household waste collections is proposed to reduce costs, standardise household waste services and increase recycling through economies of scale.”
However, Garff Commissioners minutes from the board’s meeting last week shows that the consensus among members is that “the standard of
service would likely reduce if a large, centralised contractor were to be engaged by Government and the local authorities would lose control of the cost of the service”.
It adds: “The framing of the questions suggested that government were pre-disposed to conducting a centrally administered refuse service on a fortnightly basis.”
Recycling
While having issues with the option of a centralised waste collection service, the board was more open to a centralised recycling system.
The minutes say: “The consensus was that recycling opportunities needed to be vastly improved and that a centralised recycling service is an option that could be investigated”
