Chief Challenged on Windfarm Plan

The Chief Minister has had to clarify remarks made over the proposed onshore wind turbines at Earystane.

A local resident challenged Chief Minister Alf Cannan, demanding answers about the project’s impact.

“At the Ramsey roadshow you said it’s cheaper and easier to put wind turbines on shore,” the resident stated. “Cheaper for who? Easier for who?

“Not for the people who live here, who have spent two years living with the anxiety of the project, not for the farmers whose land is threatened, not for the wildlife that will be displaced.

“You cannot balance the climate budget by sacrificing our community. Will you terminate this flawed vanity project?”

Mr Cannan responded: “I absolutely recognise there are members of the community who are very upset about the proposition. If my remarks were taken out of context, I absolutely apologise.

“When I talked about being cheaper and easy, I was not talking about impacts on communities.”

The Chief Minister added: “The question I answered was why we were going onshore rather than offshore. Technically, it is cheaper in the long term to install and maintain wind turbines onshore than offshore.”
